Juanita summer of the mariposas5/28/2023 I want to read them!) The lechuzas were delightfully terrifying, and McCall did an excellent job of redeeming the character of La Llorona. (If there are any good ones, please let me know. I wish there were more YA fantasy books focusing on Central and South American cultures. The world that Odilia and her sisters find themselves in is a fascinating blend of modern life, Odyssey checkpoints, and Mexican folklore. Review: There are a lot of things I liked about Summer of the Mariposas, and chief among them was the magical realism. Summer of the Mariposas is not just a magical Mexican American retelling of The Odyssey, it is a celebration of sisterhood and maternal love. Can these fantastic trials prepare Odilia and her sisters for what happens when they face their final test, returning home to the real world, where goddesses and ghosts can no longer help them? Along the way, they must outsmart a witch and her Evil Trinity: a wily warlock, a coven of vicious half-human barn owls, and a bloodthirsty livestock-hunting chupacabras. With the supernatural aid of ghostly La Llorona via a magical earring, Odilia and her little sisters travel a road of tribulation to their long-lost grandmother’s house. But returning home to Texas turns into an odyssey that would rival Homer’s original tale. Summary: When Odilia and her four sisters find a dead body in the swimming hole, they embark on a hero’s journey to return the dead man to his family in Mexico.

Tiny Alice by Edward Albee5/28/2023 Critics have also been interested in how Tiny Alice fits in with the body of Albee's work. Despite Albee's assertions, people continued to have a hard time deciphering the play, in which characters are symbols, words and actions have multiple dimensions, and religious expression mixes with sexual fantasy.įortunately, a large body of work helps the current reader understand many important parts of the play, including symbolism, imagery, and underlying assumptions about religion. Albee claimed in a press conference, and in his Author's Note when the text was published in 1965, that the play was quite clear, even simple, and thus did not need his explication. What did the play mean? demanded critics and viewers alike. Almost immediately, the play spurred intense controversy and sparked a debate that was played out almost daily in newspapers and magazines. Tiny Alice first opened to audiences in New York in 1964.

Reviews of sometimes i lie5/28/2023 None of the characters were portrayed as likable or reliable, another aspect which I usually would not like but worked well in this book, and I questioned their purpose several times. Although I am not usually a fan of the unreliable female main character trope, the author developed this so skillfully that I found myself enjoying the uncertainty and trying to understand her intentions.Īs the plot progresses several other characters are introduced, all part of Amber’s life and therefore possibly capable of harming her and putting her into a coma. It had me questioning if Amber was really the victim and if some of the parts were segments of her imagination or did happen. Stuck in limbo without being able to speak, Amber tries to trace her steps and understand whose fault it is that she is in a coma. Sometimes I Lie tests the boundaries of what is real and what isn’t through the powerful voice of Amber, a victim who recently woke up from a coma but cannot communicate. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth? “ Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. There are three things you should know about me:Īmber wakes up in a hospital.

Soon after, with less than two hours left in the day, the first land creatures follow. trilobites swim onto the scene, followed more or less immediately by the shapely creatures of the Burgess Shale. Then, finally, the first sea plants appear, followed twenty minutes later by the first jellyfish and the enigmatic Ediacaran fauna first seen by Reginald Sprigg in Australia. Not until almost 8:30 in the evening, with the day five-sixths over, has Earth anything to show the universe but a restless skin of microbes. “If you imagine the 4,500-bilion-odd years of Earth's history compressed into a normal earthly day, then life begins very early, about 4 A.M., with the rise of the first simple, single-celled organisms, but then advances no further for the next sixteen hours.

John sandford escape clause review5/28/2023 The cool but complex Catrin Mattson, another colleague ( Field of Prey), begs for a spinoff series of her own. His sidekicks are two other BCA agents who resemble “Mafia thugs,” but Flowers points out they’d do well in Hollywood with that look. Sporting long blond hair and cowboy boots, Flowers is sometimes underestimated by others as a law enforcement officer, but readers know he’s smart, competent and fair. Though the crimes in this novel are no joke-a subplot involves the exploitation of illegal Mexicans in the workplace-the appeal lies in the humor Sandford gives his eccentric characters. Flowers realizes he’s up against someone who intends to kill not only the tigers, but anyone who gets in the way of a deadly get-rich scheme. Flowers fears they’ll be slaughtered for parts to use in illegal traditional medicines.īut the first body he encounters is human, a small-time crook linked to the stolen tigers. The cats in this case are no household pets they’re a pair of endangered Amur tigers stolen from the Minnesota Zoo. After dealing with dognappings in 2014’s Deadline, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agent Virgil Flowers investigates catnappings in Escape Clause, his ninth outing in John Sandford’s Prey spinoff series.

Elizabeth is thrust into a conflict beyond her years and tries to help morose George, despite the fact that he cares only for himself. Violet divorces George, from whom she has long been emotionally estranged, and moves in with Harry Elton. Tragedy strikes when her foster brother, Sean O'Connor, dies fighting in the British Army.Įlizabeth returns home to the aftermath of war, tries to explain her experiences, and finds it hard to cope with being parted from her Irish family. Over five years, Elizabeth grows into an integral part of the boisterous clan. The White family in 1940 sends sheltered ten-year-old only daughter Elizabeth from London to safety in Ireland in care of Violet White's school mate, Eileen O'Connor. Linked only by letters for most of the novel, as they mature and each find tragedy in love, Elizabeth and Aisling are reunited towards the end in London where, both widowed, they resolve to begin life again together. The families are first entwined when Elizabeth White, at age ten, is sent to Kilgarret, Ireland, to escape the German bombing of London and is adopted for five years by the O'Connors, whose daughter Aisling is also ten. A Season with the Witch by J.W. Ocker5/28/2023 However, skinwalkers aren’t tragic characters turned lupine against their will, as in horror stories, nor are they some species of evolutionarily-confusing creature, as in cryptid legends. Whether a creature is identified as a skinwalker versus a dogman or wolfman often depends on the state where they’re seen-skinwalkers are known throughout the Southwest-and the size of the local Navajo population. Because of that, they’ve been lumped into the werewolf category of horror stories and the dogman/wolfman category of cryptids by settlers. Skinwalkers are humans that change into animals, often wolves. The size of my tip at the end of the tour was completely in proportion to the beauty of those four sentences. He was leading a group of us through Upper Antelope Canyon in Arizona. He was a young, laid-back Navajo man earning cash as a tour guide while studying music theory at college. Those are our boogeymen,” the guide explained to me. It’s also how the skinwalkers get around. My people believe we entered our current world through something like this. |
